The Nauvoo Public Library was founded in 1913 and officially dedicated in 1915. The librarian who worked so diligently to see the citizens of Nauvoo had reading material was named Marie Masburg. She worked at the Library for 50 years until her retirement. She had seen the library go from a "subscription" type library to a "public" library with donated books, to a library tax funded entity in 1976. Following her was Margaret Haas who served for 13 years, Connie Becker who served for one year, Lois Crouse who served for 23 years, Barb Boyles who served for one year, and Gaby Berry who served for 4 years. Jan Gerst started her librarian career December 2009.We were originally members of the Great River Library system from its inception and when four systems merged, we became members of the Alliance Library System.
Since December 2007 we are automated, and our patrons can do just about anything online, except for picking up the books they want to read, therefore a person still needs to come and see us here at the library.
Since we are automated and member of one of the biggest library systems in Illinois, patrons have the opportunity to check out books from more than 200 different libraries. The books will be delivered to our location on Monday and Wednesday (holidays excluded). This service is free of charge to anybody with a current library card.
